Learn about the history behind chicken xinxim
Chicken xinxim is a typically Bahian dish, possessing that special seasoning and famous dendê oil, a common ingredient in northeastern cuisine. Just like countless other dishes that are loved by Brazilian gastronomy, the recipe for chicken xinxim has its African origin, based on black history, which has a great cultural contribution in our country.
Did you know that chicken xinxim is a versatile dish that serves as a side dish for various others?
In addition to all this rich cultural history, this dish has a connection with candomblé and umbanda, serving as a kind of offering. One of these offerings practices uses chicken xinxim as a gift to Oxum, the Goddess of freshwater rivers. The power of this Goddess is related to birth and the power of fertilization. A simple recipe for some, but one that carries an immense baggage of stories that come from ancient times.
Although it is a typically Bahian dish and belongs to northeastern cuisine, the popularity of chicken xinxim is not the same as other meals from this state, such as bobó de camarão, moquecas, and vatapá, which are widely mentioned and known throughout Brazil. It can be said that it is a more regional recipe.
